Abstract
COMM 301 will be removed from the catalog of courses and as a Common Core requirement. Instead, the proposed course COMM 201 will become the second required course in the COMM sequence. The current sequence means that there is often a gap of two years or more between the first and second courses in the COMM sequence, with the result that skills learned in 101 atrophy or are forgotten entirely. Consequently, students are not as prepared for advanced writing assignments in their upper-level courses. The removal of this course and its replacement with a 200-level course is intended to provide students with a stronger foundation in communication skills sooner in their academic careers.
